Annotation:

The lyrical intermezzi I, II and III (see below) are based on a poem by Heinrich Heine (1797 - 1856): "Ein Jüngling liebt ein Mädchen" (A young man loves a girl), which is performed by the narrator/percussionist. The three lyrical intermezzi use musical and thematic material from the choral piece of the same name (»» see: Four songs, op. 16)
